Local newspapers |
The earliest existing newspaper in the region, the Leeds Mercury, was published in 1719. Local newspapers are a starting point for anyone studying family history or the local and social history of a community. The information once reported in the press is read by students of all ages. It can be used in school projects, college theses, local history work, genealogy.
Local newspapers are an important historical resource but, because of the fragile nature of paper, many have not survived and originals are at risk.
